HISTORY OF GOOD SHEPHERD HOUSING FOUNDATION

Good Shepherd Housing Foundation (GSHF) is a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that has operated since 1989. Starting as a volunteer initiative led by a five-person Board of Directors, their mission began to take shape when they assisted a family with a mentally ill son in need of permanent, secure housing.

In the past 33 years, our Foundation has broadened its objectives by establishing permanent supportive housing (PSH) residences. These homes and apartments aid mentally ill single individuals and adults with children. These individuals were previously chronically homeless before finding long-term stable housing through our program.

Our Foundation recognized the need for housing support in the community, specifically for hardworking families with low to limited income. In response, we took action by utilizing federal and state housing initiatives to acquire homes, and we currently provide transitional and long-term affordable housing to families who earn less than 50% of the median income.

In 2013, Good Shepherd began its Preservation Program to renovate and update our housing inventory. The goal of this program is to provide practical and safety-oriented improvements. It was funded by the county, as well as grants from the Hylton Foundation and the Philip L. Graham Foundation. The funds were used to improve windows, electrical systems, roofs, HVAC, and plumbing, making our homes safe and well-maintained for our families.

The Good Shepherd Housing Foundation is dedicated to fighting homelessness, especially among the most vulnerable members of our society, such as the chronically homeless, seriously mentally ill, and very low-income working families. The organization works tirelessly to identify community housing needs and fill any housing gaps that exist. Their efforts have led to significant progress in the battle against homelessness, and they remain committed to making a difference in the lives of those who need it most.
